Any life saving treatment can prolong death, without reversing the cause of dieses or medical conditions. Every physician is the healer and reliever of diseases, injuries and sufferings in patients. It is their ethical and moral duty to try their best to save the lives of their patients. The question arises when this duty comes in clash with the right of the patient to make decision about his own life, known as patient autonomy. When the patient, possesses the capacity of making decision to receive any medical treatment he is offered or to refuse from taking any unwanted treatment, while there are no particular prevailing obligations, then his decision should be weighted more than the ethical duty of the physician. As per the medical principles of ‘beneficence and non-maleficence’, the physicians are required to use the treatment that is best to their knowledge for saving the lives of the patients and provide them with relieve from sufferings and pains. Simultaneously, under no conditions are the physicians allowed to use their knowledge or skills to harm the patients. Prior to undertaking any such action like withdrawing/ withholding medical treatment of patient based on patient’s autonomy, the physicians must carefully value the consequences of making such decision. Various reactions came out. Some were excited about it, while others were pacified. The author entitled his students the chance to become their opposite sex. Likewise, he gave his class the option to make his/her wise preference as to what gender they most likely wanted to become after a one-day experience of becoming their opposite sex. The essay also showed a comparison of gender. But it does not suggest discrimination between the two because no one suffered ridicule why they were experiencing to become their opposite sex. True enough, having born as their gender, they will always be the gender they were initially. If they will defy their gender, they will run the risk of losing their identity because they will be ostracized and casted away from their community. They enjoy a degree of freedom in their gender adherence but they can’t completely detach and get away from their original gender. Let’s understand that being a different gender is another category; it’s another quality that needs separate space. It’s not being indifferent; it’s being a manifestation of who you really are and who you wanted to become (Julie Mullins). Being a different gender however does not mean that the person you have been before is unlikeable, it’s being enjoying what life can possibly offer. Since, the students were given the chance to become their opposite sex; they took the opportunity despite the fact that they can only become males / females through pen. Lastly, the author was able to explain that no matter how different your gender is, you can still live in a world without minding critics. If we don’t mind our genders, that would do us more good. After Fanon got away from the huge mind boggling words, I kind of felt for an extremely short second what it actually felt to be a black man. I myself am a unique mixture of races and I was fortunate to have grown up in such a way that I experienced my two main cultures vividly. I can laugh with George Lopez, and feel the pain, anguish, and laughter that are associated with a Mexican American heritage. The same goes for Larry the Cable Guy, I can laugh at what he says in his stand comedy routine, because I can relate with my Anglo culture. Going back to how Fanon explains his anguish of being labeled, it’s understandable, I’ve been there, but unlike Fanon, I learned to how to run with racial comments. It may mean that he often does something on impulse without thinking it through, and then later regrets his actions. Though he was having bad experiences onboard, Pi maintains his religious beliefs while on the life boat through his daily prayers. He takes time aside each day to say the prayers that he always would say. In one instance, he turns where he believes Mecca is located, and prays his traditional prayers towards Mecca. Pi also often states that he will include specific animals in his prayers, such as the zebra aboard his lifeboat, and the first fish that he ever killed. Hereinafter Mission Impossible Two will be referred to as MI2 and Tomorrow Never Dies as TND. I have studied the shooting script for TND and the original screenplay for Bond 18 later named TND.The opening scene of TND was set in a terrorist arms bazaar on the Russian border. James Bond has been sent there to identify terrorist suspects, a camera had been concealed with a satellite link to Headquarters in London where the mission was being controlled by British military office rs alongside British intelligence controllers. By way of the camera HQ was able to identify many of the worlds most dangerous terrorists and armaments they were trading. Admiral Roebuck decided that this was now a military matter and immediately ordered a missile strike to take out the whole bazaar. Admiral Roebucks attempt to recall the missile and the failure of the missile to respond dramatically exposes the deadline of 4 minutes 8 seconds and Bonds reaction as now being crucial.Spottiswoode now emphasises the scene by having long shots tracking the missile as screen time runs in real time. Bonds time and our time as the audience are the same, this emphasises that Bond has an apparently impossible mission to accomplish in less than 4 minutes with a real countdown going on. Firstly a scene where Hunt has 40 seconds to penetrate the Atrium in fact runs to over two minutes of screen time. A further scene gives 10 seconds to get out of a bombed van which runs for 26 seconds and finally a 8 minute scene with Hunt isolated running 6 minutes and 30 seconds. None of these run in real time and run in a kind of slow motion, which is not as effective and exciting.Spottiswoode further enhances the excitement and tension with his use of cinematic techniques during the 4 minute 8 second sequence. He uses music during the scenes at headquarters to heighten the threat and tension along with the familiar James Bond theme music when Bond appears. The use of sound is also important with the commotion at the bazaar whilst fighting and the sound of the approaching missile all create excitement, which is then contrasted with the silence aboard ship, which emphasises the countdown to impact. The use of lighting with red light aboard the ship indicating a sinister danger and the shadowy headquarters where only the characters of M and Tanner are well lit, to indicate their worry, further sets up the atmosphere of the scene.The way the film has been cut and edited has all added to the sequence, short violent scenes without fades and dissolves are contrasted with longer scenes concentrating on the missile and M who is clearly worried. This theme is carried on with the action sequences being full of movement and increasing use of explosions and gunfire as opposed to shots of M standing very still and simply conveying her sentiment. Some of the shots used which are in extreme close-up for example a fist punching, a hand throwing, a hand planting a magnetic grenade, a face thinking, eyes narrowing created with rapid cuts and editing help to give pace to the sequence. In fact the original script and shooting script was cut back by 10 pages and more to focus on this sequence. We can observe how the effect is heightened by techniques of rapid editing between scenes along with contrasting the a ction between explosive and silent and all running in real time, the audience is left spellbound. Is it possible the U.S. was jumping the gun - being too paranoid? Some would say yes, the United States overreacted when they learned the Soviet Union possessed the power to unleash a nuclear weapon. Others would say no, the United States took the necessary precautions needed to ensure the safety of not only the United States, but the entire free world. A major piece of the Cold War was intelligence. Both the United States and the Soviet Union wanted to obtain counterintelligence from one another. This information would not be considered Top Secret if it was disclosed at the drop of a hat. In an effort to keep peace, Dwight D. Eisenhower suggested having open airways which would allow flyovers, giving both sides an equal opportunity to obtain information and essentially keep an eye on the situation at hand. When the Soviet Leader, Nikita Khrushchev, refused to go along with this suggestion Eisenhower took matters into his own hands by authorizing the U-2 Spy Plane Pr ogram. Many speculations have been made about the results of this program; cover ups and denial and lack of commitment to the program being the main two arguments. The following four sources have given me much insight into the events leading up to the U-2 Plane Incident, as well as the events that occurred afterwards. In the Memorandum of Conference With the President dated December 16, 1958 it was dually noted that the President was in fact enthusiastic about the program, but had his reserves about whether or not the information that would be obtained by these Top Secret flyovers was worth the actual risk . This concern came from the fact that the U-2 Plane is suspected to have been detected on almost all of its previous missions west of the Urals. After more discussion, being aware of any surprise attack seemed to outweigh the fear of detection and that any intelligence gained from these flyovers was highly worth the risk taken. The Memorandum was not definitive in the matter, leaving one to wonder if Eisenhower still had his reserves . On July 8, 1959, a little over 6 months later, another conference was called. In the Memorandum of Conference With the President dated for this date, Eisenhower yet again expressed his concerns about the U-2 Spy Plane Program. Eisenhower remained very cautious with the matter, fearing that this espionage was going to get the United States involved in a very ominous situation. When Eisenhower approached Secretary Herter directly, asking his views, the Secretary assured him that the intelligence obtained was well worth any chances of being trapped by the Soviets . To help ease the mind of the President, Herter further explained that a single operation was being planned and that in an effort to not get caught, the plane would enter in one country and exit through another. As a part of the plan, they all agreed that if in case there was any question about the involvement of the United States, the defense would be complete denial of the matter. Under these stipulations a nd seeing the increasingly aggressive behavior and attitude of Kh rushchev, Eisenhower found himself having to decide if the operation was worth the cause of a possible war. After considering all discussions and recommendations, Eisenhower gave his consent to continue on with the operation. May 6, 1960 the Department of State made a Press Release about the U-2 Spy Plane Incident. In this press release, they stated exactly what they had planned in th e conference dated July 8, 1959; they completely denied that this plane was being used for anything other than to collect weather data for the National Aeronautical Space Agency (NASA) . The pulse pressure and heart rate are also increased, thus shortening circulation time. In the central nervous system, the thyroid hormones increase the responsiveness of the brain tissue to catecholamines, thus activating the reticular activating system. Critical Book Review Of Charles Payne Book History Essay Charles M. Paynes book Ive Got the Light of Freedom is a wonderfully written book. Payne describes the civil rights struggle African Americans faced during the 20th century especially in Greenwood, Mississippi. Paynes underlying focus is that of the strong tradition of organizing against oppression African Americans had. It is seen throughout the entirety of the book. One in particular was the Students Nonviolent Coordinating Committee activism in Greenwood during the 1960s. He explains that the movement of the 1960s was not the only one of its kind. Many people today believe that movement for racial equality in democracy and schools for African Americans only became possible because of the actions of Martin Luther King and the NAACP in the 1960s. They were of course very effective and participated but were not the only reason African Americans began to see change. Ive Got the Light of Freedom, layouts in detail that there was no sudden change and it was a long fought effort. Instead of being a just decade of activism, it was more of slow construction of multiple decades made possible by previous African American activist that created the foundation possible for change. Payne was able to do all of this beautifully. Ive Got the Light of Freedom, was great because it explained the influence elder activist had and explained in detail key aspects of the Mississippi Freedom movement. Both are very interesting and essential to the improvement of equality African Americans were able to see during the 20th century. The theme of building upon the past was a great aspect of the book. He did this by describing the importance of elder activist and how they shaped the Mississippi Freedom movement. This is seen in the beginning of the book which was very essential to the overall base of the book. In the first four chapters Payne explained how elder activist laid out the ground work. Some of these African American icons were Medgar Evers, Amzie Moore, Aaron Henry, Ella Baker, Septima Clark, and Myles Horton. Payne was able to correlate how all of these people played a huge role laying the brickwork. One example was the formation of the Council of Federated Organizations (Payne, pg 62). COFO was organized in an order to create a unified unit so that a meeting with Governor Ross Barnett could be established. Payne writes, COFO became the organizational vehicle that allowed the younger activist to exploit the networks built at such cost by the older ones. Had the veteran Mississippi activist, with their credibility and contacts, taken the stance toward the other groups that the national organization consistently took, the movement of the sixties would have had more difficulty establishing itself (Payne, pg. 62) Further more Payne also used a quote from Lawrence Guyot, a SNCC field secretary that stated without people like Amzie Moore contacts and help would not of been possible (Payne, pg. 62). All of this explains to the reader the power and influence the older generation of activist had. This is incredibly informative necessary when explain the true movements of African Americans during the 20th century. Another example would be the importance of schools like the Highlander. The Highlander was cofounded by Myles Horton. In the 1950s the school became a meeting and training center for all people active in the civil rights movement (Payne, pg. 70). One of the major characteristics about this school was that it went against all state laws. The Highlanders was an interracial school that pushed egalitarian living (Payne, pg.70). The Highlander trained many well-known activists such as Rosa Parks, E.D. Nixon, and Diane Nash of SNCC (Payne, pg.71). One can understand more clearly how the students of SNCC were able to work with White Americans in Greenwood after their mentors had done so previously at the Highlander. Furthermore Highlander would incorporate soul music which would stick with members that attended and help bring a voice to the oppression in the South. The constant push for community early on really keeps the reader stuck in the book. Ella Baker was another one of these activis ts that arguable had the largest impact on organizations like SNCC. Baker was considered a radical democrat and constantly insisted on organizations to not be formed in the NAACP mold. For instance an organization that would hear all voices and also help develop leaders, instead of bossing around members (Payne, 101). This was seen early on my Ms. Baker while backing up Citizenship Schools that would try and get more African Americans to register for voting. Payne however explained the importance all of these civil rights leaders had for SNCC and all movements in the 1960s best. The SNCC organizers who started working in the most feared counties in the Deep South in 1961 and 1962 had to learn a great deal quickly but they were not starting from scratch. They were heirs to a complex intellectual legacy shaped by older people whose thinking had been informed by lifetimes of practical experience, a legacy reaching at least far back as Miss Bakers grandfathers farm (Payne, pg. 102). All of these activist played huge roles and Payne is able to give a voice to these heroes. Another amazing aspect of this book was the Paynes immense detail of almost every aspect of the movement. This was seen in the media, nonviolent aspect, and the skillful use of the government. He is able to easily explain how everything worked during the sixties and some tactics used. With pressure from activist around the country, the Civil Rights Bill was passed in 1964. Activist realized that the only way to see change was to test the bill at local level (Payne, pg 319). This was headed by the NAACP which was at the forefront after SNCCs success. Payne writes, In some cases, they made it virtually impossible for merchants to conduct their normal business. They would go to the Holiday Inn, for example, just before noon and take up all the seats. When looking at Charles M. Paynes Ive Got the Light of Freedom, one cannot find any flaws. This book was able to bring the struggle of African Americans in the south into full spectrum. While focusing on the Mississippi freedom struggle during sixties Payne was able to inform the reader on many aspects. For instance why there was a sudden surge of success in activism in the sixties. One now knows that it was actually a snowball effect. A struggle by activist like Medgar Evers, Ella Jo Baker, Septima Clark, Myles Horton, Amzie Moore, etc who had been fight well before the sixties. They would use their knowledge and help guide organizations such as SNCC so that the momentum of the movement would grow stronger. Through this development of leaders and transformation into an everyone has a voice system progress would be made. Next, Brown is confronted with the virtuous people who live in his community, who will be attending the witch?s meeting with the devil. He has to decide if he will follow them along this path. Brown struggles to see if his wife is at the witch?s meeting, as he stands at the edge of the forest watching everyone he knows worshiping the devil. He must choose whether he will adjust his moral standings and join his group, or keep his original morals. He is led by Faith into this situation of evil. He and Faith are bro ught to the altar before the devil to be baptized into Brown?s self- created hell, a world of secrets in the human soul. Brown must choose to either look up to heaven and have faith in God, or doubt his own spirituality and follow others into hell. Goodman Brown leaves his wife, Faith, and Salem village in the daytime to keep his appointment with the devil, and he ventures into the forest without his ?faith.? This is a moment of irrationality because he leaves his wife, home, and security to take a dangerous and unknown path. He doesn?t want Faith to find out the evil intention of his errand because he says, ?she?s a blessed angel on earth; and after this one... ...s, and that frightens him more than anything else. His inability to judge between good and evil also prevents him from cuddling or accepting ?faith,? and interacting with the other townspeople. He lived a long miserable life and died with ?no hopeful verse upon his tombstone, for his dying hour was gloom?(319). His death was gloom because he didn?t know where he was going to end up, above or below his deathbed. Brown?s moral and social isolation is the worst possible evil that a man can ever have happen to him. If he would have looked at the evils in mankind, he could?ve recognized the good in people. Furthermore, they motivate and enable fellow managers or employees to build the capacity for change to occur. Organizations need to have many innovative managers because they have a positive attitude toward competition and entrepreneurship at the work place. Moreover, a manager’s capacity to innovate in an organization is positively associated with organizational climate (2006).
